Knowing what size your dog or bitch should be at adult age is a great way to set a baseline for what they should weigh, though it isn't unheard for some to be bigger or smaller than average. My dog Maya for example, was the biggest female in her litter, weighing 8kg at 8 weeks! She is considered above average for an adult female Greater Swiss Mountain Dog so her weight will be above the average for her breed and gender.
Monitoring their physique can help identify any potential issues that can be fixed if needed. A rule of thumb for checking your dog is at an ideal weight by sight and feel, is that you should be able to feel their ribs with little pressure. This can be very helpful for dogs with long fur as a second way of checking their weight is ideal is by not being able to see their ribs. On leaner breeds, such as Grey Hounds, Whippets, Saluki's etc, this can vary.
They should also have a 'dip' between the bottom of the rib cage, leading to the pelvis. These are basic ways to see if your dogs body is at their ideal weight, it will vary from breed to breed so knowing the baseline for their average weight will be your best asset. Taking your dog to be weighed regularly will also help determine if they are gaining or losing an unusual amount of weight, like humans, their weight can vary from a few pounds gained or lost, but if there is a dramatic change, it can be caught early.
Overfeeding
Weight gain can happen for a variety of reasons, but the most common can be overfeeding. Even on the best foods, overfeeding can cause weight gain, especially when human foods are thrown into the mix. It's very easy to give into those puppy dog eyes when you have a bacon sandwich, but a slice of bacon to a dog is the equivalent to a human eating 4 and half bags of crisps! The treats can sadly add up so it's best to avoid human foods as much as possible.
Medical Reasons
Medical sources can also cause the pounds to pile on, steroids can cause a dogs weight to increase even though they're needed to help fight certain infections. The side effect of increased hunger can also put pressure on owners wanting to satisfy their dogs. Polycystic ovary syndrome and Cushing's syndrome can also be a cause, if you suspect these at all, check with your vet and have the relevant tests performed.
Age
Much like us, with age we tend to slow down and our activity levels drop some, it's the exact same for our dogs. Its common to see dogs in their golden years to be a little chunkier than in their youth, this is where either a dietary or aging food can be helpful for them. The size of your dog determines when they're classed as seniors:
Small Breed: 7 years of age
Medium Breed: 7 years of age
Large Breed: 6 years of age
Giant Breed: 5 years of age
Spaying & Neutering
A common side effect of a dog or bitch being spayed or neutered is gaining weight. This is due to their hormones being affected by the loss of testosterone and estrogen, which can take a toll on their metabolism in the long run. Though it is slightly inconvenient, these procedures have many benefits and this side effect should not put you off should your dog need this.
Why Wellness CORE?
To conclude, weight gain can happen for a variety of reasons, but it's important not to panic! Every dog owner will have gone through this at least once and we're here to help you on your journey to help get your dog down their ideal weight. Our Wellness CORE Low Fat Turkey is made specifically to help dogs who are a little over than what they should be.
The 30% lower fat content and turkey protein are the perfect combo to allow your dog to feel full whilst shedding those pounds. The food will target the unwanted fat, keep those muscles strong and keep their energy levels up. Paired with suitable exercise and (your dogs may not agree on this part!) cut in treats, you'll start to see a difference in them and their overall health.

A healthy mind can do wonders for dogs of all ages and they thrive when these needs are being taken care of. An early and continuous routine of enrichment through their lives can help slow down age-related cognitive decline and can be very beneficial for dogs prone to anxiety or those with high energy needs.
These activities can also be useful should the worst happen and your dog is unable to go for walks due to an injury and needs to be on crate rest or is recovering from a surgery. Did you know a 20 minute enrichment activity such as sniffing, can equate to an hour's walk? Mental activities are much more tiring than physical exercise so having these ready when needed can really help your dog feel fulfilled and rested. Obviously, walks are very important and we shouldn’t replace one for the other on a regular basis, but having this ready for emergencies and everyday walks, allowing and encouraging to really get those noses on the ground can do wonders for them.
We like to call these ‘Sniffy Walks’ and I always make sure my own dog gets at least one of these a day. We go at her pace and I just let her sniff anything and everything (except that discarded hotdog we found that one time), there are just days where she doesn’t want to run around so these walks can be just what she needs. A dogs olfactory receptor has 300 million neurons compared to a humans 6 million, they’re used to sniff out contraband, finding survivors, even sniffing things like gluten in our food for a reason!
These activities can also be good to know in case something happens where your dog is unable to go for walks, should they break a bone for example and need to limit physical activity or recovering from a surgery, mental stimulation can be more tiring than physical exercise so they can feel fulfilled without physically leaving the house. On a normal day however, these can be fun for both pet and owner.
🐾 Snuffle Mats: Fabric mats with hidden pockets, fabric pieces and tricky compartments for your dog to really get their nose in and snuffle out those hidden treats. These can also work wonders for dogs who really scoff their food down, using their nose and brain can slow down the eating process and allow for proper digestion. This can also be created by simply folding a towel and hiding treats in the folds.
🐾 Hide & Seek: A fun game to really get those noses working. You can hide treats around your house and instruct your dog to ‘Go find it!’ this will really engage their noses to track down the hidden snacks, this can also work with special toys or items if your dog prefers them over treats.
🐾 Puzzle Feeders: A little trickier than a snuffle mat for those extra smart dogs. Puzzle Feeders often have hidden compartments and locomotive elements that your dog needs to figure out to find the food, perfect for indoor and outdoor play.
🐾 Magicians Cups: I love this game, this is fun for both owner and dog and works exactly how you’re imagining. Hide a treat under a cup, switch it around and see if your dog can find it! This is great for encouraging problem solving and memory.
🐾 Trick Training: Teaching your dog a cue for fun can be great way to really get them to think, these don’t need to be essential obedience cues so teaching them to, for example, weave through your legs, walking backwards, army crawling or even teaching them to dance can be both physically and mentally stimulating, it can also be a great party trick!
]]>It’s always a busy time when a new litter is born, and we know there are lots of things you need to do before the pups leave for their new homes.
Once you get the pups through those early days - and you get a chance to breathe - it’s a good idea to start thinking about puppy packs.
Puppy packs are a great tool to help your new puppies settle into their new family and new homes, especially in those first few days away from mum.
There are lots of different options to put in your puppy packs, but what you decide to include is completely up to you.
The good news is, we’re here to take a little bit of pressure off and help you save on the cost of putting together a puppy pack.
Puppy packs provide a great opportunity to give your new owners all the documentation needed for their new puppy, along with advice, from you the expert.
Puppy packs can differ from breeder to breeder, but generally include things like;
Other optional items can include toys, blankets, bowls and treats.
There are lots of new things the pup will encounter in their new home, and it might take a few nights for them to adjust to their new environment, but at least one thing that can be kept the same is their food.
Nutrition is extremely important in giving a puppy the best start in life, and that’s why we do not compromise on nutrition. Wellness CORE Puppy recipes are designed by a team of animal nutritionists along with veterinary specialists so that they are specifically tailored to meet the needs of puppies.
Additionally, when a puppy transfers to a new home it can be a stressful situation that may also present as stress diarrhea. Keeping the puppy on the same is one way to help minimize the chance of those digestive upsets and allow the puppy the best start in their new home.
You are the expert as the breeder, so your recommendations are very important.
You will be the one of the best resources for your new puppy owners for anything and everything regarding their new puppy, including educating them on the importance of nutrition to the overall wellbeing of your pup throughout their lifetime.
But you are not alone in this education, we have launched the TINY PAWS Puppy Club with our partners at Pets & Friends to provide ongoing nutritional and training advice from our pet experts to help your new puppy owners through their puppy’s first year of life.
Find out more about TINY PAWS Puppy Club.
As a member of the Wellness CORE Breeder Programme, we provide FREE Puppy Packs*, which include a small bag of the food and a can of the wet food to not only continue your puppies on excellent nutrition, but it also provides some continuity that will help to reduce the likelihood of digestive upset to make the transition that little bit easier.
Not only do we want to provide food in the CORE Puppy Packs, but we also want to provide advice and guidance for your puppy owners to use throughout their puppy’s lifetime.
In our CORE Puppy Welcome Pack, we include;
It can be expensive raising a litter, that’s why we offer FREE Wellness CORE Puppy Packs*, which include food, to help you save on this extra cost, so you don’t have to fund it yourself!

]]>As an experienced breeder, you will already know how important dental health is for your dog’s overall health and wellbeing.
More than 80% of dogs develop dental disease by the time they are an adult. The gradual build-up of plaque on a puppy’s young teeth can in time develop into tartar, gingivitis and if left unchecked this can develop into discomfort, bleeding, and in advanced cases, it can lead to systemic health problems.
Prevention is always better than a cure, so you will know there is no better time to start looking after their teeth than when they’re young. As an expert in breeding dogs, you can play a big role in helping new puppy parents understand the importance of dental care for their puppy when they take them to their new homes, and the benefits of starting these habits early.
Helping your puppy owners to start dental care habits
As a breeder, you will have the platform to educate your puppy owners on how daily care is an essential process to raising a healthy puppy. Not only will dental care help them to support their pup’s overall health and wellbeing, but it will also introduce the pup to being handled and cared for in preparation for any future vet visits and treatments.
When it comes to specifically supporting their dental health, you can help guide your pet parents to get their new pup used to dental care habits. You might have your own tips, but here are our tips which you can share:
Step 1: Get the pup used to their mouth being gently opened.
Step 2: Introduce a basic brushing technique by gently running a finger along the gums and teeth.
Step 3: Eventually introduce a finger-brush or toothbrush to support the daily cleaning of their teeth.
Ensure your new puppy owners know this experience of having their mouth handled will contribute to the pup staying calm during dental care routines.
Inform your puppy owners of different dental care techniques
You can ensure your puppy owners know that choosing a high-quality dental care product tailored to the pups age can be one of the best ways to help control dental disease and, whilst brushing with a toothbrush will always remain the gold standard for dental care, finding an additional dental chew which is tailored for your pup’s teeth is a great option to both clean teeth and also alleviate discomfort whilst they’re teething.
The mechanical chewing action of a dental chew will gently scrape the plaque and tartar buildup off the teeth in each bite, whilst also promoting gum health and fresh breath. With less plaque and tartar buildup, the cycle of dental disease progression is considerably slowed and even better, they can enjoy a tasty reward.

]]>You might have noticed over the past few years your dog may be starting to show some signs of aging. A slower routine, a few grey hairs, the occasional tummy upset, or even a new disinterest in their food. By reading these signs early on, we can play an active role in helping them age gracefully and enjoy a lifetime of wellbeing.
There are many tips to help older pets stay happy and healthy, switching to an age-appropriate nutrition is one of the best ways to support their changing needs.
Whilst these changes are often more pronounced in dogs over 10 years of age, it is recommended to start proactively feeding your older dog food that better suits a senior dog's lifestyle before the visible signs.
Wellness CORE Senior Original Turkey with Chicken recipe has increased protein to support lean muscle mass for continued mobility. It is fortified with age-appropriate levels of vitamins and minerals to support the immune system.
It also has lowered fat to match the energy needs of slower, less energetic dog with L-Carnitine to help the body turn fat into carbohydrates that cells use for fuel to help your dog keep an ideal weight.
The CORE Senior recipe also includes Glucosamine and Chondroitin to support joint health and has omega-3 & -6 fatty acids help maintain skin and coat health, to ensure even your aging dog has a healthy, shiny coat.
And for an added boost of mobility...
Try the NEW Wellness CORE Reward+ Mobility Treats! A turkey-based recipe with glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate supporting optimal hip & joint health.
Whilst Wellness CORE Senior is our preferred diet for aging pets, most of the adult formulas are balanced for all life stages of a dog’s life. A normal, healthy older dog can use the adult formula throughout their lifetime.

]]>As experienced breeders, you will understand that the nutritional requirements of small breeds are very different to larger dogs so it’s important to consider these when choosing the right food.
Small Breeds have a higher energy need per kg than that of the larger breeds which needs to be considered when selecting a food.
They are also more predisposed to common health issues such as dental disease and obesity, both of which are a direct result of what we feed them.
Selecting a nutrition that is tailored to their unique needs is one of the best ways to ensure that every small breed dog enjoys a lifetime of wellbeing.
Every Wellness CORE Small Breed dry recipe is scientifically crafted with smaller, crunchy kibble to suit their small mouths and to help reduce plaque build-up.
Each CORE Small Breed is crafted with higher meat protein and fats to deliver a tasty recipe that even the fussiest dog loves, and also packs in more calories per bite that will help to fuel their active lives and match their increased metabolic needs.
Wellness CORE dry recipes that are specifically tailored for Small Breeds:
- Wellness CORE Small Breed Adult Original Chicken and Turkey
- Wellness CORE Small Breed Adult Ocean Salmon and Tuna
- Wellness CORE Small Breed Adult Low Fat
Wellness CORE also a range of wet recipes for Small Breeds which offer a number of different benefits. The CORE Savoury medleys provide a more intense smell and taste in a convenient serving size. With enticing textures and a high moisture content, wet food has many fantastic advantages that can make mealtimes engaging.

]]>Feeding only dry dog food has many advantages; it is complete and balanced, readily available, easy to store, with a longer shelf life.
Whereas, wet dog food offers a number of different benefits. From its more intense smell and taste, with enticing textures and a high moisture content, wet food has many fantastic advantages that can make mealtimes engaging.
When combining the both, it can really give your dogs the best of both worlds!
What are the benefits mixed feeding?
While premium natural, complete and balanced kibble (such as Wellness CORE) delivers all the nutrients your dog needs to thrive, when you mix in a wet food it is a great way to significantly improve the texture, taste and smell of your dog’s meal - this in turn will make their bowl more exciting and can strengthen your dog’s excitement about mealtime.
With the new taste, texture and smell, along with the added variety, adding in a wet food is a great option for fussy dogs!
Mixers and toppers can also add a boost of nutrients such as proteins, vitamins and minerals and, it also provides extra hydration from having a higher moisture content (which is especially helpful during the summer months).
What should you look out for when selecting a recipe?
Feed high-quality recipes
Having a variety should not compromise nutrition or predispose your dogs to the risk of digestive upset; make sure to select products from a brand that you know and trust.
Select appropriate life-stage, breed size and lifestyle recipes
Whether they are puppy or senior, small or giant, active or inactive, these are all unique dogs that require customized nutrition. When selecting a wet food, make sure you choose one with a similar breed size, life-stage or lifestyle as your dry food, so that your dogs will get nutrition tailored for them.
Why choose Wellness CORE dry and wet food to mix feed?
Wellness CORE is committed to delivering the highest quality all-natural recipes for dogs throughout all recipes, wet, dry and treats. Following this philosophy, you can be reassured that you are feeding the very best, whether it’s dry, wet or combined.
Wellness CORE recipes will never contain:
What Wellness CORE wet recipes are available?
Every dog is different, they not only have different nutritional needs but personal preferences as well.
Wellness CORE has a selection of recipes in dry, wet and treats that are designed to meet the different nutritional needs of dogs whilst also offering enough variety for rotation.

How should you mix Wellness CORE dry & wet recipes?
Whether you choose to feed 90:10, 70:30 or 50:50, there is no exact ratio needed when feeding your dogs a mix of wet and dry food.
However, it is very important to pay attention to feeding guidelines when adding a mixer or topper to prevent overfeeding.
Wet food contains considerably less calories per gram than dry kibble, so you will not be able to swap-out a gram of kibble for a gram of wet food.
But fortunately, Wellness CORE recipe has recommended feeding guidelines for mixed feeding to make it easier!
For example, if you are feeding Wellness CORE Puppy Original for Small – Medium Breeds dry food with wet food, you will need to reduce the dry kibble by 37 grams for every 170 grams of wet food.
The recommended feeding guidelines are provided on the back of each Wellness CORE recipe and also in the product description of the CORE Breeders website.
Is there any further advice needed for mixed feeding?
1. Consult with your veterinarian
Some dogs have specific nutritional needs, check with your vet to ensure you are feeding the right food for your dog.
2. Introduce the new food gradually
As with all new food, we recommend gradually introducing the new recipe to your dog’s diet to allow your dog’s digestive tract to adjust. Start with a small amount of the new product and increase until your preferred mix by day 7.
3. Don’t leave wet food out or sitting in the bowl.
Wet food can easily spoil, particularly in warm weather so do not leave it out at room temperature for an extended period of time
4. And lastly, always make sure plenty of fresh water is available.
For any questions on mixed feeding with Wellness CORE, contact our breeder team today.
Congratulations to this years' CORE Breeder Family winners who believe every dog deserves a lifetime of well-being and believe in food you can trust.

If you are a part of the CORE Breeder Family and would like your Crufts 2022 Results published on this blog, please get in touch with us today. Contact us.
Crufts 2022 saw over 16,000 dogs from around the world competing across 4 momentous days for just seven places in the Crufts 2022 Best in Show final. Patrick Oware the breeder, handler and co-owner of Baxer (Almanza Backseat Driver) Flat-coated Retriever take home the coveted title of Crufts 2022 Best in Show, accomplishing his childhood dream.
Not only is Baxer and Patrick’s success an historic and significant moment for them, it is also a great honour for Wellness CORE to be the food of choice for the 2019 and 2022 Best In Show winners at CRUFTS.
Baxer is fuelled by our Wellness CORE Active Life recipe. Patrick explained his choice in a testimonial about CORE: “I feed CORE because I CARE about my dog’s health and well-being. CORE Active Life supports his need for energy. The high-quality animal protein in the nutrition keeps him lean and strong, and the coat is healthy and shiny.”
As an Official Crufts Sponsor, Wellness CORE Managing Director, Wim Petermans, states: “Huge Congratulations to Baxer (Almanza Backseat Driver) Flat-coated Retriever and his caring owner Patrick Oware on their fantastic achievement winning Best in Show 2022 at Crufts! We are so proud that Patrick is part of our amazing Wellness CORE Breeder Family and are delighted to work with him. Our Wellness Pet team was also super happy to be out at Crufts again meeting with all our breeders, customers and consumers, and celebrating numerous successes in Breeds and Groups, along with the ultimate prize of Best in Show!”

]]>In typical Toni and Lisa (Mair Jones) style it rapidly became one of our misadventures!
In order to travel to Europe with the dogs, we currently need to have an Animal Health Certificate (AHC). These are only valid to travel out of the UK and back to the UK once and must be completed within 10 days of travel. We collected ours the day before we travelled and got the dogs wormed for their return journey as this needs to be done between 24 hours and 5 days prior to our return.
When I got home from the vets, I checked the AHC against the one from our previous trip and noticed that something had been missed so it was back to the vets to get it amended! It is very important that the AHC is completed correctly as any mistake can prevent you from travelling.
Further details on how to obtain an AHC for travel can be found at; Taking your pet dog, cat or ferret abroad: Getting an animal health certificate - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
The form itself isn’t particularly complicated but is approximately 10-20 pages long depending on how many animals you are taking across. It contains proof of their identity and vaccination status.
We travel using the tunnel as this enables us to stay with the dogs throughout the journey.
Before we travel, we must upload advance passenger information which currently includes our passport details and our ‘statement of honour’ for our arrival in France.
The trip to the tunnel was uneventful and we checked the dogs in and were given the option of an earlier crossing which gave us just enough time to grab a coffee before boarding. However, this is where we really started to notice the tightening of restrictions in Europe as were not allowed to get out of our vehicle whilst on the tunnel.
Once we arrived in Belgium we called in at a shop where we discovered how strict they are on masks as someone followed us in with a UK exemption lanyard and was asked to leave. When we arrived at the hotel, we had to show our Covid passes before we were allowed to check in. Of course, Lisa’s covid pass is from a different health authority as she lives in Wales so the QR code couldn’t be read! Thankfully, they accepted it and let her stay. Subsequently we were prepared for the same issue getting into the Expo for the show.
Day 1 of the show was Lisa and Kazhiya’s turn. I walked across to the Expo with them in case there were any problems getting in and thankfully they were willing to accept her covid pass. Unfortunately, we hadn’t realised that the show required us to show the pet passports so I had to run back to the hotel to get Kazhiya’s AHC which caused problems as they initially weren’t prepared to accept it and we were told to get Belgian passports (which a friend had organised an appointment with their vets for us later in the day). Thankfully, they finally accepted it and Kazhiya went on to win 1 exc open dog, the RCAC and RCACIB against the champion male so has started his Belgium championship!

That evening we were joined at the hotel by a dear friend and her Briard puppy Pink, who is now besties with George and Layla, so we celebrated George obtaining his Dutch and international titles from our previous trip.
Time for Day 2. We woke up to rain which is never a good thing with coated breeds. Luckily, our trolley is big enough for both dogs, so we built the trolley and walked across to the show. Thank goodness we didn’t have the same issues that Lisa had had the day before, as we presented the dogs new Belgian passports.
George was due in the ring first between 10 & 11:30 with only 14 Beaucerons in the ring before. Briards and Layla (Catalan Sheepdog) were due between 12 & 1pm, so we thought it would be a reasonably relaxed day.
Our judge took an hour and a half to judge the Beaucerons and then went for his lunch, so Layla ended up in the ring first where she won 1ex champion bitch, CAC, CACIB & BOB!

Then it was a mad dash back to the Briard ring as the judge had returned. George was graded excellent, won the champion dog class, and proceeded to win the challenge for best dog along with the CAC & CACIB completing his Belgian title!

After the bitch judging we challenged for BOB and won so Lisa was going to have to take Layla into the group for me.
After the Briard judging and photos, we headed over to the handling class where the judge put us through our paces. We wouldn’t find out our placings until the presentation in the main ring later in the day. We headed back to ‘base camp’ to give the dogs a drink and start preparing for the group when we realised, we only had 10 minutes before we were due in the collecting ring, so it was another mad panic as we had 2 dogs to prepare!
The groups are judged very differently in Europe. All the dogs enter the ring under the watchful eye of the judge who then picks out a shortlist to go over. Our judge selected the Tervueren and the Bouvier Des Flandres then from halfway down the ring pointed to George! I was thrilled! What a way to finish his title by getting shortlisted in the group! George had won the group at this show back in 2018 so there was no way we were going to be lucky enough to win it again, or was there?
We were down to the final 4 and the judge had made his decision. This point is always very stressful as the placings are announced in French and in reverse order, so I had to listen carefully for ‘Briard’. First out was the Tervueren in 4th place (fantastic we were finishing on the podium). Next was the Bouvier in 3rd place. It suddenly dawned on me that we might actually win the group again. 2nd place was called out and the commentator hadn’t said Briard….?! We had only gone and done it again!! George was the winner of FCI group 1 at the Kortrijk Euroshow 2021!
We had time for a short break before the handling finals, so we made sure that George had the opportunity to have a rest whilst we went to collect our BOB trophies. Then it was time for the handling class. I haven’t really competed in handling classes for a number of years and our judge was ‘old school’, so I wasn’t confident that I had done enough to win in such good competition. To my surprise, we managed to win the handling as well!
We then watched the rest of the judging whilst George had a rest before best in show. In the collecting ring I met up with fellow CORE ambassador, Kathleen Roosens, who had won group 9 with another of her gorgeous Papillons, James, who is a son of the famous Dylan. George pulled out all the stops and powered round the big ring but unfortunately only placed 9th in Best in show.

Back at the hotel the restaurant was closed so dinner was a cheese sandwich left over from the show and a bottle of prosecco that had been purchased to celebrate with friends at the show whilst attempting to complete our PLF’s for the return home. In the end we gave up and decided to set off to the tunnel early to ask for help as we were unable to scan our Covid passes and when it eventually allowed us to do that it wouldn’t accept the codes for our day 2 lateral flow tests. In preparation, I had taken the tests with us, or we would have had to purchase new ones. The team at the Eurotunnel were very helpful and we managed to get our PLF’s completed and uploaded.
As we had arrived so early, we were able to book an earlier train which gave us just enough time to head to duty free and pick up a bottle of champagne for our new year tradition (we bring in the new year with a bottle of champagne purchased in Europe to ensure our adventures continue the following year).
After a steady drive from the tunnel back home it was time to relax and start planning the next adventure……

The puppies are 7 weeks old and we’re getting ready to send them to their new homes!
We have increased the amount of Wellness CORE Puppy Original to 350g per meal between all 11 of them and, we’re feeding this amount 4 times a day. We still use water to make the kibble into a paste and, we feed them using three dishes so that everyone can get in!
As for milk, Bambi is now only going in once every other day as her milk is drying up... however, we feed the little one and two others separately so they don’t get pushed out by the bigger ones.
For the past month, we have started to get the puppies familiar with the world around them in a positive way by introducing different people and different sounds. Having two young grandchildren visiting often, the puppies are becoming familiar to different ages and sizes of people. We also have a radio playing continually and my husband is keen on mowing the lawn, so they are very used to different sounds… hopefully this will prepare them for noises they are likely to hear in the future.
As we are getting ready for the puppies to leave, some of the new owners have been to visit and choose their puppy… The new owners are so pleased with their choices and, better yet, they puppies that were chosen were happy to be picked up and cuddled by their new owners!
We communicate with all our puppy owners using a Facebook page. Having a Facebook page for all Malrich Basset owners helps our new owners follow the journey and development of their puppy whilst also helping us to keep in touch with puppies from previous litters.
As Bambi and her Basset Bambino’s have been doing so well on CORE, we used the Facebook page to tell the new owners about Wellness CORE.
We will be sending them to their new homes with Wellness CORE Puppy Packs - which includes a sample of CORE dry and wet food... Although they will take home a sample of CORE Puppy Food, we have also posted a link to Wellness CORE on the Pets&Friends website so our new owners have the option to get a supply of Wellness CORE before bringing their new puppy home.
The first puppies are going on the 1st Dec and the last one will leave after Christmas… stick with us for the next stage of their journey!

Wellness CORE Puppy food is truly focused on the growth and development of small and medium breed puppies. The nutrient requirements of puppies can be up to five times adult levels, so puppy foods typically contain higher amounts of protein, fat, fatty acids, and vitamins to aid in the growth and development of the animal.
Why choose Wellness CORE Puppy Original for your Puppies?
Available in 1.5kg and 10kg.
What type of puppies does this recipe suit?
This recipe is recommended for puppies that will be under 25kg as a full-grown adult.
Weaning
As for the feeding guide, we do not have a recommended amount for puppies under 2 months as each puppy is different so optimal feeding amounts may vary with size, breed, and environment.
The weaning process varies significantly depending on size of litter, age of weaning, how much solid food vs mothers milk consumed and each puppies weight.
Simply add water to the kibble to make a paste to introduce the food to the puppies. We suggest offering the food in small quantities at first and increase where necessary.

One of the most important considerations when selecting the best puppy food for a large breed dog is avoiding excesses and providing well rounded nutrition.
Large breed puppies typically have a genetic tendency to grow too quickly, and this can sometimes result in incomplete skeletal development and lifelong joint issues.
It is critical to control the growth rate of these larger puppies with the appropriate number of calories and tightly regulated levels of calcium and phosphorus.
Wellness CORE Large Breed Puppy Original supports strong muscles and bone development with optimal levels of calcium & high-quality protein ingredients. As large breed puppies take longer to mature, our recipe is formulated to ensure a steady, healthy rate of growth by nutritionally supporting balanced muscular and skeletal development.

It’s been a whole month since Bambi gave birth to 11 puppies!
In the first 3 weeks the puppies had Bambi with them 24/7. As the puppies were so little, we also made sure to stay with them during this time to make sure there were no accidents.
Bambi nursed the puppies and fortunately we didn't need to give extra feeds as they were growing well - even the little boy who has just hit the 2lb weight and the others are now over 3.5lbs.
We started to wean them just before they turned 3 weeks with the Wellness CORE Puppy Original Recipe for Small and Medium Breeds.
We added hot water to soak the CORE Puppy kibble and then use an electric hand blender to make it into a porridge like consistency, then we wait for it to cool down before feeding it.
After they aquaplaned through the first few feeds, they start to realise they should be eating it!
To begin with we started with a very small amount of CORE Puppy kibble and increased the amount every few days at this stage. After this the first few days, we have been increasing the amount of kibble each week.
We keep Bambi separate whilst they eat but she goes in with them after each feed and stays in as long as she wants… but now they have started to get sharp teeth, occasionally, she asks to come out quickly!
Now that they are 4 weeks old, they are eating 280g of Wellness CORE Puppy Original 4 times a day. And as you can see… it’s a messy process!!
Due to the size of her litter, Bambi is also having 4 meals a day of 200g and we’re still using the Wellness CORE Puppy Original recipe for her as this recipe contains higher amounts of protein, fat, fatty acids, and vitamins to help Bambi recover.
The Puppies have started to play, and you can hear them barking and growling with each other, chewing each other's legs and ears resulting in the occasional ‘yelp’ when someone has gone a bit too far!.
The first couple of new owners are coming to see them this weekend, I update them every few days with photos on our Facebook page. All except one new owner is on their second or third Basset from us and some are coming back for their fourth!
The other one new owner has previously used two of our stud dogs in the past so not really a newbie to us either!
Follow the next step of our journey with the puppies as they continue growing, playing, and eating, and to their first introduction with their new families.

Debbie and Malcolm Ellrich of Malrich kennel are experienced breeders of Basset Hounds. They each have 35 years’ experience of breeding and have had many litters over the years.
Together they own Bambi, a 3-year-old homebred Basset Hound who they mated with “Adam” Malrich Stand N’ Deliver, a 5-year-old homebred stud dog.
This is the first of a series of Puppy Diaries with the Wellness CORE Breeder Programme. We will be following Bambi the Basset Hound and her journey from pregnancy to birth to weaning over the next few months.
We began showing Bambi and she had a good start to her showing career, winning well in puppy and junior but her showing career was halted due to Covid.
Bambi displayed some exceptional qualities of making a good brood bitch, so we made the decision to mate her our homebred stud dog, “Adam” Malrich Stand N’ Deliver.
Adam is 5 years old and has given the Malrich kennel some fantastic puppies over the last 5 years. His father is an Australian and American Ch “The Coachman” and his mother is homebred English Ch Malrich Ana Steele. “Coach” was used for a complete outcross as Ana Steele was very closely bred. Adam has won several firsts, as well as a RCC and a BIS, despite note being a fan of the show ring.

At 4 and a half weeks after mating, I took her for a scan and the pregnancy was confirmed… she had 4 puppies on the way!
From then, Bambi grew bigger and bigger.
We were fortunate as Bambi had a typical pregnancy. We made the decision to feed her Wellness CORE Puppy Original during her pregnancy and she maintained her condition and health throughout.
Her due date was the 8th of October, but the morning of the 5th of October she looked very uncomfortable. She took a while to eat her breakfast – even though she normally eats it straight away – and she then slept for several hours.
In the early afternoon she kept lying on her back and rolling about – just how a Basset would scratch themselves – but we then noticed her legs stiffen… she was pushing! Although we have whelped litters before, this position was a first for me, but we know each bitch can be different during whelping.
She kept pushing and the pushing then intensified.
After a short time, I could see the fluid sack appear but recognised the puppy was in a breach position. I knew she would need help, so I asked my husband to hold her head while I assisted. We helped get the puppy out and Bambi let everyone know that he was here; she isn’t normally vocal!
And there we go; puppy number 1 was born - a black blanket male weighing 15.5oz at 15.03pm.
An hour and a half later, number 2 arrived - another black blanket male. And another 15 minutes after that, number 3 was here - a smaller black blanket bitch - the first girl!
At 17.19pm number 4 arrived, another girl!
But wait… Bambi was still huge! It was obvious she still had more puppies to come…
Steadily through the evening, puppies kept on arriving with the final one arriving at 12.28am.
Bambi whelped 8 dogs and 3 bitches: 7 black dogs, 1 red and white dog, 2 black bitches, and 1 red and white bitch.
To get 2 red and whites was a surprise, however the grandparents on both sides are red blanket Bassets.
We’re pleased to share Bambi’s pregnancy and whelping experience with the CORE Breeder Family.
Please stick with us on our journey with the puppies until they leave to their forever homes.

Amelia and Annette Siddle joined the CORE Breeder Family as CORE Ambassadors earlier this year. We are proud to have them on board to share their knowledge and expertise.
We've asked Amelia some questions so our CORE Breeder Family can get to know her better!
Read what she has to say about Wilchrimane Pointers and their experiences as well as Amelia's career, not only in the ring, but as a successful artist and sculptor.
As a child I wanted nothing more than a Border Collie; after doing some research my parents decided a Smooth Collie would be a better fit, so they went and purchased a Smooth Collie from Aileen Speding and Carol Smedley of “Antoc’ - ‘Fred’. He didn’t like me much, he adored my parents and had little to no intention of ever being my agility dog. He hated showing and enjoyed nothing more than being a farm dog – scratching around at home with the sheep and enjoying the simple things in life! This resulted in me taking a more forward role with the Pointers.
I fell into Pointers by proxy of my mum, Annette Siddle, already having them. Her first was a liver and white rescue, she then subsequently went onto purchase a bitch from Cicely Robertshaw ‘Crookrise’, and a third bitch from Malcolm and Betty Leslie ‘Stonebridgelees’ who became the foundation for our kennel.
Together with my mum, we own and breed Wilchrimane Pointers. Our affix is an amalgamation of the family’s names – Chris, Annette, Amelia and William.
We have been lucky enough to enjoy considerable success with our dogs and pride ourselves on producing quality, happy, healthy animals with temperament and the breed standard always at the forefront of our breeding programme.

Obviously, I am completely biased; I genuinely don’t believe there is a better breed – they will share your skin if you allow them to! They can spend hours sat on the couch watching a film, or happily climb a mountain with you and walk for days; they really are so much fun. Our dogs are subjected to various spectacles, all in the name of art, and only ever want to please. They are incredibly sensitive souls, and definitely come under the category of ‘thinkers’. As family members they are loyal, kind and unafflicted.

I find them completely captivating. They are the epitome of class and elegance, and nothing exemplifies this more than watching them do what they are bred for. In the show ring they still hold that aristocratic demeanour, but when watching them in the field, galloping and on point it goes up another notch. A Pointer on point is a beautiful thing to observe. Their poise and concentration is amazing, and this is when the ‘series of graceful curves’ really comes into play and can be understood in its entirety.

I have a penchant for the short-coated breeds as a rule, there is nothing to hide on any of them - their construction and muscular form is a joy for any artist to behold. I have learned a great deal in terms of anatomy and construction by watching both my own dogs, and others in the ring, at home and in the field.

I fell into showing as a junior handler as my mum was already attending shows. I had some notable success in handling, but always enjoyed the breed classes far more.
I found junior handling stressful - a stressy fourteen-year-old girl isn’t a pleasant thing for anyone. That said, junior handling taught me a huge amount about how you present yourself, your dog, ring etiquette and other elements that I still carry with me now. I attended Young Kennel Club camp multiple times and had a huge amount of fun within the YKC. I also received an incredible amount of support as an emerging artist from the YKC and subsequently the KC and that is something I will forever be grateful for.
I love the rapport with your dogs that showing gives you, putting the time in at home, to spending those precious few minutes in the ring together gives you a fantastic bond and makes any wins even more special. Growing up and sharing the hobby with my mum as well adds another thoroughly enjoyable dimension to it as well.

Pointers are widely known as ‘aristocratic’, and most importantly should be a series of graceful curves. There should be no straight, hard lines on a Pointer. The curves we look for together with the symmetry and impression of strength, without losing elegance, is what makes them unique. Their heads should give the impression of a slightly dish faced appearance that is so unique to our breed and further exemplifies that aristocratic, and dignified presence; but without turning them into caricatures. Nostrils should be wide and eyes dark. Ears thin, slightly pointed at the tips – never heavy or thick. Oval bone, and as a galloping breed they should show excellent muscular development which they should be able to use to advantage when moving. Hackney action is a huge fault, the breed should cover the ground effortlessly with reach and drive, this, is when they come alive – heads carried high enabling them to scent the air, whilst the hallmark tail, which should be medium in length – thicker at the root to taper to a point, resemblant of a ‘bee sting’ lashes from side to side.

We have bred and campaigned multiple champions and group winners in our breed.
Most notably Flo – Sh Ch Wilcrimane Ice Maiden JW WW'13, who we campaigned to a total of 31 CCs, 12 group wins; and 2 RBIS - we had a stellar time together in the ring, a journey which also took us to the World Dog Show in Hungary where she won the breed under late, esteemed breed specialist Pepe Haro Haro and went onto take second in the group. It was a time when there were a set of beautiful bitches being shown in the UK – Sh Ch Wilchrimane Ice Maiden JW, Sh Ch Sharnphilly Juici Cuture JW and Sh Ch Kanix Chilli. All three were beautiful and all three enjoyed incredible and well-deserved success in the ring. Looking back, it was a privilege to achieve the success we did, with the quality that was in the ring at the time.

Frankie - Sh Ch Wilchrimane Frankel (ai) enjoyed phenomenal success as a puppy - most remarkably winning the adult Gundog group at Windsor championship show at just eight months old under world renowned Ann Ingram. She became a ‘baby champion’ at eleven months, and then cemented it with her fourth CC under breed specialist Linda Westron (Aurichalcum) at just twelve months old – making her the youngest show champion in breed history to our knowledge.

I must give a mention to my honouree Pointer - Arthur, Sh Ch Copper’s War of Roses, who I co-owned and campaigned with Blake Crocker. We enjoyed great success in the breed classes, and through to Group and BIS level during my time campaigning him. Whilst Pointers are my ‘heart breed’ – I am incredibly proud of our achievements together. He also gave me an appreciation for hairy dogs and the work that goes into producing and presenting coated breeds to show ring standard.

This is difficult! I have enjoyed all our notable achievements; they have all come at different stages and each one has been undeniably special in its own right.
The pinnacle if I had to choose would probably be Crufts, with Flo (Sh Ch Wilchrimane Ice Maiden JW WW’13). Both, her very first CC under breed specialist John Evans (Joneva) and her 27th CC, together with BOB under breed specialist Mick Howes (Medogold), she also went on to take second in the group that year. There is just something about Crufts…

I have always adored sighthounds in general, in particular Whippets. I think it’s the artist in me, but the curves and elegance of them as a breed I find completely mesmerising – they are one of my favourite breeds to feature in my work. I’d love a Great Dane, but there is no room left on our couch at the moment because the Pointers refuse to lie on the floor, so he’ll have to wait! Irish Setters will always hold a special place in my heart as well. They look so beautiful when out together with the Pointers. I definitely prefer the clean-up of the Pointers when they’ve been galloping through mud to the Irish though!
My tights fell down in the ring when I was 16 in a stakes class during my triangle, literally one leg around my ankle and a puppy in the ring - that wasn’t great!
Another time I jumped over a rogue dog poo at Malvern, and my leap was so utterly spectacular that my skirt split up the back. Taught me more than one valuable lesson that day!
Do it! Dog show folk are a breed all their own, but I can certainly speak for Pointers that we are an incredibly welcoming bunch. I have grown up within the breed and consider a large proportion of the people I have spent every weekend with for the last twenty odd years to be some of the best people I’ve ever met. Do your research, visit various kennels, and learn what you like. Go and visit breeders and see the dogs out and about, galloping and out exercising – don’t just go to a dog show!
Pointers as a breed can be notoriously and frustratingly fussy. Since feeding CORE their appetites have increased ten-fold. We aren’t wasting food and feeding times aren’t a roulette of who is going to eat their dinner. Furthermore, our dogs have never looked better. Ocean puts coat condition on them like I have never seen, the black dogs we own their coat is now like glass. Without having anything to hide with coat and furnishings on a Pointer, the coat condition is imperative; it is the final touch and accentuates the best of our dogs. Their muscle condition is highlighted, and we can confidently know that they are conditioned to the best of our ability, from the inside out.
Being an ambassador is something we are so proud of. Our dogs are at the heart of everything that we do, so to be able to condition them and represent Wellness CORE through our kennel, working with a fantastic team of people is something we are passionate about. The ethics the company holds dear, along with the quality of the product makes it unquestionable to us.

Go for it! You won’t look back – our recent litters, together with their mums have thrived on CORE. They never hit the 6-week fussy stage we have experienced with other foods, and subsequently have developed beautifully. The morning “clear up” (!!) has been more civilised since we made the change as well!
As a responsible owner, it is so important that what we put into our dogs is of the highest quality with none of the excessive fillers commonly associated with other brands. We want our dogs to have the best, feel the best, and look their best – feeding them CORE is the perfect way to do this.

I work fulltime as an artist and have done since a very young age. Growing up within the dog show community gave me a tremendous platform to meet likeminded people, who loved their dogs and gave me encouragement and support for my work that has been invaluable. My work – bronze sculptures and paintings are showcased around the world and in private collections. The Kennel Club have been a huge support to me all the way through my career; I am incredibly proud to have pieces on display and commissioned by our UK Kennel Club, including a sterling silver sculpture of a Pointer, commissioned by the Crufts dog show committee in 2016.

My work is also my passion, so on that basis alone, that - as well as the dogs takes up most of my spare time. When I’m not ‘working’ I spend my time winding down by working on pieces that are not commission specific. I thoroughly enjoy photography, so that would probably be up there as well – following my dogs around with the camera or coming up with hairbrained ideas for photoshoots. My favourite thing to do is to load up the van and descend on the beach with all the dogs - they have the best time, and it never fails to make you smile watching them all crash through the waves.

Back in April, Maastricht dog show opened its entries for its 46th & 47th championship show and amongst the doom and gloom of another Covid lockdown I decided to enter in the hopes that we would be able to attend. As September loomed closer it was looking less and less likely that we would be able to travel as we were on the quarantine list for the Netherlands and our hopes were pinned on the Covid announcement due on September 20th.
There had been several months of planning to ensure that we could meet all the new Brexit requirements including ordering a 1.8kg bag of Wellness CORE dog food as there was a 2kg maximum allowance and it had to be sealed in its original packaging. The dogs were all set to have their Animal Health Certificate (AHC) completed but all we could do was wait, then on September 16th the new covid restrictions were unveiled and travel restrictions were lifted for fully vaccinated passengers from the UK, we were off to Maastricht!
A nerve racking few hours later we entered the pet reception at Eurotunnel Folkstone to have our AHC checked and we got the all clear. Next was border control which we sailed through and I even got rather excited about getting a stamp in my passport! The remainder of the journey was uneventful by our standards (we have previously had detours through fields), and we arrived at our hotel with plenty of time to get prepared for the show.
Then came the big day! Day 1 of the show we were there bright and early eager to get in and pitch camp for the day. We found a good spot where we could see all 3 rings and were joined by some of our friends. As the day progressed it became obvious that George and Layla would be in the ring at the same time, so I reluctantly handed Layla over to Lisa. As our class was called my stomach was churning. We had been waiting since December 2018, when George took his 4th CAC, to compete. When he was old enough to complete his title, he was graded excellent and awarded first in his class and in the challenge he was awarded the RCAC giving him the final point he needed to gain his title making him our first Dutch champion.
As I came out of the ring I looked over to Layla’s ring hoping there was a delay in judging to see Lisa showing her to BOB making Layla our second Dutch champion a matter of minutes later!
With the usual efficiency of FCI shows the groups we had finished with the group by 4pm so we packed up the van and headed across the border to Genk to pay a surprise visit to a friend and have puppy cuddles before heading back to the hotel to start the mammoth task of completing the passenger locator forms for our return to the UK.
The following day we returned to the show and this time all 3 breeds were in the ring at the same time so thankfully my friend Djulia stepped in to pilot Layla to yet another BOB whilst I concentrated on the Briards where George went on to gain his International championship title. After judging we settled down to wait for the group where my friend surprised me with a Stroopwafle cake to celebrate George’s win.
After the groups it was time to pack up the van and say our goodbyes before we headed to the tunnel where the inevitable problems struck (we don’t call it our misadventures for nothing)! Lisa’s PCR test result hadn’t come back so it was off to find a doctors in France to do a PCR test and wait for the results, by some miracle we made it back to the train with 2 minutes to spare.
Congratulations Toni & 'Team CORE on Tour' on all of your achievements!

Protein is a very important part of a healthy balanced diet and has several roles in the body such as hormone control, enzyme activity, immune function, tissue growth & repair, metabolism, brain chemicals & moods and heart function.
These are long chain molecules made up of 22 standard amino acids and are divided into two groups;
The group of amino acids which are considered essential differs with species.
Amino acids essential for dogs are; Arginine, Isoleucine, Lysine, Phenylalanine, Tryptophan, Histidine, Leucine, Methionine, Threonine and Valine.
Amino acids from food proteins are the building blocks of all proteins synthesised by the body to ensure its vital operation and psychological functions.
There is no hard and fast number when it comes to classifying products as being high protein nutrition but there are a couple points to consider.
Firstly, always compare diets by the guaranteed analysis, this is found on the back of the pack that tells you what levels are in the finished product. This analysis is the best way to compare foods protein content and avoid the confusing marketing claims on the front of the packs.
Most premium diets contain around 22-28% Crude Protein. As a high protein offering, this amount in the guaranteed analysis can increase between 30-37% Crude Protein.
When high quality meat-based proteins such as turkey, chicken or salmon are included at increased amounts into a dog’s diet, this can deliver nutrition that vitalises their well-being:
When meat rich proteins are included in higher amounts in dogs’ diets, a dog will not only look great but feel great too.
One of the biggest myths in relation to higher protein diets is that they can be unsafe for large breed puppies, older dogs and overweight dogs. In all three cases these myths have been disproven by sound, robust and continual scientific studies.
Protein FACT #1: There is no direct link that protein contributes to musculoskeletal growth disorders in large breed dogs.
Studies have shown that differences in protein intake with levels of 15%, 23% and 32% protein did not affect the occurrence of skeletal development in Great Danes. The bigger culprits that directly correlate with orthopaedic problems in large breed puppies are excess calorie intake or increased calcium levels due to over-supplementation.
Protein FACT #2: Higher protein diets promote superior weight loss and body condition maintenance.
Obesity levels today are alarmingly high at 54% of dogs. Key contributors include the sedentary lifestyle of many dogs as well as the types and amount of food we’re feeding them.
Research has shown that dogs fed a higher protein diet with lower carbohydrates lost more weight. In these studies, dogs also maintained their lean muscle mass while losing fat, leading to overall improved body composition than dogs fed a high carbohydrate, low protein diet.
Protein FACT #3: Older dogs benefit high protein dog food with no risk to their kidney health.
Thanks to robust medical preventative care and disease treatment, dogs today are living longer than ever, reinforcing the importance of tailoring our nutrition to support the ageing dog. As a dog ages, they require more protein. When insufficient protein is provided, it can aggravate the age-associated loss of lean body mass and may contribute to lowered mobility and earlier mortality.
Feeding higher protein to an older dog helps support their increased requirements, maintains their muscle mass for mobility and most importantly, has been shown in numerous studies to have no adverse effects on a dog’s kidneys.
A protein-restricted diet is only recommended for dogs that have been diagnosed with chronic kidney failure. Restricting protein for healthy older dogs is not only unnecessary but could be detrimental.
One of the most common myths is that high protein dog foods can cause hyperactivity and or aggression in dogs.
Dogs are omnivores and have evolved to eat diets rich in protein. The relatives of dogs, wolves, eat a prey-based diet which is normally high in protein and low in carbohydrates.
Interestingly, a wolf’s diet is typically made up of 52% protein, 47% fat and 1% carbohydrates.
Furthermore, the milk provided by a lactating bitch is predominantly higher in protein compared to other species such as humans and cows. This reflects both a high dietary protein requirement as well as a metabolic adaptation to manage it.
A study undertaken by Dodman* on the effect of dietary protein on behaviour in dogs showed that the aggressive behaviour in dogs was unchanged by changes to dietary protein levels. Further studies were undertaken in 2000 looking into whether high protein diets could cause hyperactivity or aggression in dogs and the conclusion was made that a connection could not be found be proven.
As there are no peer reviewed publications that detail any adverse effects associated with high level protein intake, there are no regulatory bodies that set a maximum level for any life stage.
Another common misconception is that high protein diets can cause itchy skin. Good quality protein fuels skin & coat health. Hair is 90% Keratin requiring large amounts of daily dietary protein.
The quality of protein is determined by the amino acid composition of the protein, its digestibility, and its ability to meet an animal’s requirements.
Sometimes dogs will have a sensitivity, allergy, or intolerance to certain types of proteins, such as pork but this is more to do with the protein source and not the quantity.
Also certain grains may be linked to sensitivities, that’s why we exclude them.
Wellness CORE recipes provide highly digestible, high quality protein sources.
We also have a variety of recipes that have different protein sources or are single source protein so if there is one you want to avoid, we have other options.
The most common signs of protein deficiency are;
Protein deficiency can have an adverse effect on all of your dog’s organs, immune system and cells. It can also affect the intestine and can lead to leaky gut syndrome. Some deficiencies can even cause liver disease, depression, lameness and neurological issues.
Here at CORE, we believe that when it comes to feeding your dog, protein is one of the most important ingredients you need to look for when selecting the best food for your dog.
Feeding a diet rich in meat protein helps promote the optimal health of all dogs from Chihuahuas to Great Danes. When high meat is combined with a moderate fat level and a lowered amount of grain free carbohydrates, the result is perfectly balanced nutrition ensuring a dog can thrive in all life stages from an active puppy to a sedentary senior.
Now, this approach is different to some high protein diets that claim to feed your dog like a Wolf. Whilst these diets are high in protein, they may also be combined with high fat levels. These high fat levels were crucial for wolves to fuel their highly active lifestyle as well as ensure they survived the harsh times of famine. Today though, our dogs not only look very different from a wolf, but they are far less active and genetically have different dietary requirements. So, whilst protein remains a very important dog food ingredient, we need to make sure the fat levels are not too high.
Wellness CORE delivers natural, superior protein-rich, nutrition that’s specifically crafted for modern dogs to thrive. Featuring fresh meat and concentrated meat sources as our key ingredients, every CORE recipe is combined with moderate amounts of fat, low carbohydrates and a unique blend of wholesome fruits, vegetables, superfoods, botanicals and nutritional supplements to be the best meat-based nutrition available.
Furthermore, in all our CORE products we include the amino acid Taurine. This is essential for cats but not dogs however, it plays a key role in most organs and helps with brain health, heart health and eye health.
A new pet food should be gradually introduced to your animal by mixing it with their current food. For a nice, slow transition, replace the old food with the new food in small increments over the course of one week. It can take 4 to 6 weeks for a pet's digestive tract to fully adjust to a new diet so do not be alarmed if your dog’s transition takes a little longer.
All of our diets are complete and balanced so you when feeding them to your dog, you will not need to supplement with any extras.

Feeding wet food is a great way of adding extra hydration to your dog’s diet as it has a higher moisture content than dry.
Most dog’s love the smell, taste and texture of wet food which makes it ideal for puppies, fussy dogs, or older dogs. This is because it is mainly made up of proteins and fat which are preferred by dogs for their palatability. It is also easy to digest so a great option for dogs with sensitivities.
If the wet food is complete, then the answer is yes. However, there are a few things to consider.
Absolutely! Feeding both wet and dry food provides your dog with many additional benefits. It adds more moisture to the diet and improves palatability for those dogs that are fussy. There are also things you need to consider if you choose to feed wet and dry:
You do not have to mix the wet and dry together. You can feed dry for one meal and wet for the next, as long as you follow the advice of refrigerating leftovers and ensuring you adjust the dry portion according to the feeding guidelines.
In the summertime you can put wet food inside a KONG and pop in the freezer for a cool treat! KONGS are available from Pets and Friends.
This range provides a unique, grain free complete and balanced meal, delivering essential nutrition in a minimally processed form.
These tasty pates are made using only fresh, real and wholefood ingredients, with 95% animal protein, combined with chunks of healthy veggies and enriched with vitamins and minerals.
Our Wellness CORE Small Breed Savoury Medleys are specially created for small breed dogs. A delicious taste, exciting textures, and a variety mouth-watering cuts of meat and wholesome veggies you can see in a delicious sauce.

Lack of dental care can lead to dental disease. Dental disease is a very common and the #1 health issue in dogs.
Dental disease includes any health issue affecting the mouth, including inflammation, tartar, gingivitis, and periodontal disease.
Only 14% of dogs receive regular dental checks/care at a veterinary clinic and only 2% of owners brush their pets' teeth daily (the gold standard) which when matched with the high incidence of dental disease, indicates that the majority of dogs are not receiving adequate dental care.
Dogs are stoic animals so do not exhibit dental pain in the same way we do. Often subtle signs like halitosis, calculus, drooling or rubbing their mouths are the early indicators of dental problems that owners either mistake as normal or miss completely.
Tartar, the yellowish film on the tooth surface, can harden into bacterial plaque in as little as 24 hours
Bacterial plaque can only be removed mechanically and not by brushing alone. If not removed it can lead to gingivitis.
Gingivitis symptoms are reddening of the gums and bleeding. If left untreated it can lead to periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease is irreversible and often leads to tooth extraction as bacteria destroys the gums. Left untreated, dental disease can cause not just tooth loss and severe pain but also systemic health issues such as heart, kidney, and liver disease.
WHIMZEES dental treats are designed to help remove plaque and tartar for adult dogs by mechanically scrubbing the tooth. With a firm texture and unique designs, WHIMZEES encourage a longer chew time for extended cleaning and feature nubs and ridges to help clean hard to reach places.
With increased dietary fibre, WHIMZEES Dental Chews have a firmer texture which helps polish a dog’s teeth while they chew and encourages a long chew duration.
A secondary benefit of dental treats is that when a dog chews or gnaws for a period of time, the salivary glands are stimulated causing an increased production of saliva into the mouth. Saliva in dogs has some antibacterial properties and is specifically effective against Escherichia coli and Streptococcus Canis which can help minimise plaque development to help support overall dental health.
*Based on a study at an independent kennel.
WHIMZEES Toothbrush has achieved VOHC Acceptance for Tartar and Plaque Reduction in Dogs.
Optimal plaque control for dogs ideally needs to be administered daily. We would always recommend brushing as the gold standard but also understand this is not always achievable.
Most dogs enjoy gnawing and chewing so giving them a daily dental treat, such as WHIMZEES, not only looks after their teeth, but also provides a reward they look forward to.
When used daily, WHIMZEES are proven to reduce plaque (dramatically reducing the need for veterinary teeth cleaning) promoting healthier teeth, healthier gums, and fresher breath.
In terms of making dental care a habit, we suggest introducing WHIMZEES into your dog’s daily routine just like breakfast and dinner time. You could even give your dog a WHIMZEES when you brush your own teeth!

A major part of determining good health and condition is shown through the dog’s skin and coat. As breeders of show dogs, you will all understand how vitally important it is that your dog’s coat is full of lustre and exceeds the breed standards.
In this article our Ambassador, Margaret Anderson, has kindly shared her experience.
Margaret has been showing dogs since 1979. She has made up Champions in several breeds including Miniature Pinschers, Pomeranians and Lhasa Apsos. Margaret has won over 100 CCs as well as group winners and has shown Lhasa Apsos since 1990. Her proudest moment was winning Best in Show at Crufts in 2012.
“The type of coat will determine how often and what needs doing to adequately take care of your Dogs. My Miniature Pinschers coats did not take as much time to maintain compared to the Pomeranians and latterly the Lhasa Apsos.
The important thing is starting them off young. This makes it so much easier for them no matter whether they are going to show or pet home. I like to start them off on a table so they can experience being handled, groomed, having their mouths looked at etc. I always reward them so that this becomes a positive experience. I want my puppies to be happy and confident around grooming and at the vets!
Lhasa Apsos take a lot of grooming. Even if kept as pets with short, clipped coats, they ideally need to visit a groomer once a month rather than 6 to 8 weeks which is what is commonly thought. Their coats grow incredibly fast and can soon become tangled due to them moulting into their coat rather than outwardly shedding.
Lhasa Apsos like to be kept clean, so bathing and coat care between groomer visits is vital. They have sensitive skin, fragile coats and are prone to hot-spots so I choose to use a gentle shampoos and conditioners when bathing them.
.It is important to me that the food is high quality as this reflects on the skin and coat, especially with my breed. Wellness CORE Ocean Adult is my main choice, although they do have the Lamb and Original also. Their coats look amazing on it which helps with the overall care. My dogs are looking fabulous and absolutely LOVE Wellness CORE food!”
All Wellness CORE recipes are high protein, meat rich, natural, grain free, scientifically crafted, and outcome based. This is important for healthy skin and coat. As hair is 90% keratin, which requires large amounts of dietary protein, having high levels of quality animal protein really fuels the skin and coat. Our grain free recipes avoid ingredients associated with allergies which in turn minimises skin upsets. The inclusion on Omega-3 fatty acids supports skin health and reduces inflammation.
Wellness CORE Ocean Adult is the go-to recipe for skin and coat. The dietary fibre and prebiotics in the recipe support digestive health, improving nutrient absorption and digestion and promoting the ideal balance of intestinal bacteria whilst the Omega-3 fatty acids from salmon help promote healthy skin and a shiny coat.
And as with humans, food trends can change for our pets over time too, and in recent years, the motivation to switch your dog to a grain-free recipe has been a health trend that in most cases, has revolutionized the pet food industry.
This has spurred a change not only away from commonly used corn and wheat but also reductions in total carbohydrates, thereby changing the way we can feed our pets to higher protein, moderate fat and lower carbohydrate diets that in effect, helped create the position of grain free, the right way
Why do people choose grain-free?
Whilst clinically the numbers of dogs diagnosed by their veterinarian with a true food allergy is very low, many pet parents worry that scratching, hotspots, and stomach sensitivities can be the side effects of their diet.
Which grain-free option is best?
When it comes to grain-free recipes, it’s important that you choose food which hasn’t just eliminated grains and replaced with other low-quality carbohydrates. All Wellness CORE dog food recipes are grain-free, the right way.
What is grain-free the right way?
By removing grains from the recipe, Wellness CORE animal nutritionists have crafted the ideal balance of protein, whole food carbohydrates and fats to ensure that each recipe provides optimum nutrition for your dog.
Wellness CORE recipes start with the base and then ensure the correct vitamins and minerals are added to the recipes as well as scientifically proven enhancements such as omega fatty acids that, when combined with increased amounts of high quality meat proteins, can make for a lustrous skin and coat.
The amazing benefits of a Wellness CORE diet do not go unnoticed, speak to our ambassadors today over on our dedicated Facebook group for more insight and real-life experiences with the CORE diet.

Digestive difficulties and stomach upsets can really impact your dog’s lifestyle, so ensuring their diet contains the right nutrition to help offset any digestive issues will help them become happier and healthier.
Wellness CORE have recently introduced the new Lamb range into their portfolio to help pet parents combat those digestive issues.
Why is Lamb different?
Suitable for all breeds, the Wellness CORE lamb nutrition is made entirely of a single lamb protein source, with fresh lamb being the number one ingredient. Lamb is a fantastic, easily digestible red meat alternative to the poultry and fish recipes.
Meat protein such as fresh lamb delivers superior rates of digestibility, especially when compared to plant-based proteins used in other nutritional sources. Choosing lamb can help alleviate some digestive symptoms, particularly those pets suffering from food allergies.
The high-quality lamb used as part of the Wellness CORE nutrition contains all the essential amino acids for cell growth, is a rich source of vitamin B phosphorus, zinc, iron, linolenic acid and omega-6 fatty acids. All these nutrients make lamb the perfect choice for pet parents seeking to optimise their dog’s digestive health.
Is the recipe grain-free?
As always, the Wellness CORE nutritional recipe uses grain-free carbohydrates, which helps avoid common grain and food allergies.
With more of the good stuff and no fillers, Wellness CORE delivers nutrition that helps dogs thrive from the CORE.
To find out more about Wellness CORE lamb, and how Wellness CORE nutrition can help improve your dogs wellbeing, visit our CORE Breeders Facebook Group; where our ambassadors and breeders can share their experiences and results of using the CORE nutritional portfolio.
